High Definiton TV Receiver, or HDTV as it is called, is the change of the TV broadcasting system from analog to digital. The picture and sound are so clear, that for millions of TV-viewers it is indeed an exciting breakthrough from the system that has existed for the past 65 years. Since the inception of color TV, HDTV is considered another new beginning in the history of TV.

It is now an integral part of American TV and every night a few hours of programs are broadcast with HDTV. There are 3 basic methods by which high-definition programs are received. There are 3 types available : Over-the-air broadcasts, Cable HDTV and Digital satellite TV. It is important to find out which type of HDTV signal is available near your home, so that you can buy the necessary equipment for that type.

The consumers definitely have to be educated about HDTV as channels like the BBC intend to broadcast all its TV programs with HDTV by 2010. In UK the filming of many programs is done with HD cameras. Set-top boxes of many companies are available in the market. Again many of these set-top boxes receiving HDTV broadcasts can only display the images as per the HDTV technology if the TV set has a higher performance that this technology requires. In America the total turnover from analog to digital should not happen later than 2009.

People who have been watching HDTV pictures have become so addicted to it, that they are looking for more HD material, because what is available is not enough to satisfy them. They can watch movies now after the introduction of 2 high-definition disc formats : HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Now the basic requirement for all TV screens is an over-the-air digital tuner. So, any component that has an analog TV tuner must definitely have a digital tuner. This has already been implemented since 5 months. There are also tunerless models available in the market, and for these the viewers don't have to tune in over-the-air broadcasts.

In course of time many low-cost converter boxes will be manufactured by electronic makers. These will connect the antenna and TV, and the picture is expected to be clear and crisp as they will all be high-definition images.
